Planned Parenthood is
now facing a host of problems
From, The Kentucky Citizen Digest,
July/August, 2002.
What could be wrong with a group that appears to promote the planning of parenthood? Lots, opponents say.
For starters, critics say the organization has very little to do with responsible parenting, and lots to do with the promotion of promiscuity and the termination of pregnancies. In 2000, Planned Parenthood dispensed contraceptives to 1.8 million women. Many were teens who got the contraceptives without their parents’ knowledge. In the same year, Planned Parenthood, the largest single provider of abortion in America, performed 197,070 abortions.
Abortions account for 30 percent of Planned Parenthood’s income according to Ed Szymkowiak with Stop Planned Parenthood (STOPP) International. "Remember, it's an abortion 'industry.' It's a business," Szymkowiak said. "At 350 dollars, on average, for an abortion, Planned Parenthood's abortions in the year 2000 brought them an income of nearly 69 million dollars."
While Planned Parenthood’s abortions have increased by 20 percent over the past four years, adoption referrals have significantly decreased over the same time period. On average there are 80 abortions for every adoption referral. "You get less than three adoption referrals per Planned Parenthood clinic for a whole year," Szymkowiak said.
Planned Parenthood has legal problems as well. A class-action lawsuit filed in California alleges that Planned Parenthood failed to fully inform women about the link between abortion and breast cancer. Another class action suit alleging genocide and exploitation of minority communities was recently filed in a Missouri court.
In May, an undercover investigation alleged a pattern of a widespread cover-up of sexual exploitation of teenage girls. According to research by Life Dynamics, a pro-life public policy group located in Texas, a majority of pregnant girls age 15 and younger were impregnated by adult men. By law, Planned Parenthood is required to report such information to the authorities, but Life Dynamics’ undercover investigation of over 800 Planned Parenthood clinics found that "many clinic workers openly acknowledged that [underage sex] is illegal and that they were required to report it, but an ‘overwhelming majority readily agreed’ to keep secret the illegal sexual contact."
