Home
school regulations still stalled in committee
Lack of support
for home school bills could mean their demise
From Kentucky
Citizen Digest, March, 1998
Three bills that would result in increased regulations of home schools still have not budged from the committee where they were first introduced, probably due to lack of support.
When the bills, HB 435, 436 and 441, were first introduced, bill sponsors Freed Curd, D-Murray, and Barbara Colter, R-Manchester, undoubtedly thought they could convince their colleagues that their legislation was needed.
But even before the bills were introduced, there was little support for regulating families who teach their children at home. And when the bills were introduced, home schoolers got on the phones and delivered an impressive barrage of calls to lawmakers.
Curd, who sponsored two of the bills, is chairman of the House Education Committee, a position that gives him great power over education bills. But even that position has not helped him gather support for the home school regulations.
Frankfort watchers point out, however,
that even bills that seem dormant can end up making their way through the
process. The bills could still see daylight, however.
