Homosexual
marriage pitched to lawmakers
Proponents of
same-sex unions are geared up for General Assembly in January
From Kentucky
Citizen Digest, Sept, 1997
In an August 19 meeting of the Interim Judiciary Committee of the Kentucky General Assembly, homosexual groups called out their troops to convince state lawmakers to vote against a measure that would preserve the traditional legal definition as a relationship between a man and a woman.
Although male homosexuals were virtually absent at the meeting, lesbian couples, several with adoptive children, were placed front and center. As the reporters scribbled and the cameras rolled, the homosexual life style was pitched to legislators.
Some of testimony from homosexuals criticized the committee for not dealing with “more important issues,” like poverty and women’s health. Others argued that marriage is a “cultural construct” that is different in different societies. One lesbian who testified argued that, since some societies condone polygamous marriages (marriages involving multiple spouses), there is no way to draw a line between what is an acceptable marriage and what is not. According to Martin Cothran, public policy analyst for The Family Foundation of Kentucky, same-sex marriage “would do for marriage what Jack Kevorkian does for sick people.”
When supporters of the prohibition on same sex marriage approached the table, however, it was to boos and hisses of the mostly partisan pro-homosexual audience. Judith Reisman, the author of Kinsey, Sex and Fraud, presented documented evidence, much of it from homosexual sources, showing that the long-term, committed relationships that homosexuals claim are commonplace among gays are largely a myth.
The
panel did not vote on the issue, but is expected to take it up during the
General Assembly, which begins next January.
